How can I earn the respect of my family when uncles have shown support, but cousins sometimes cross the line?

Excessive familiarity breeds contempt, said Thomas Aquinas.

It is very common to be disrespected by those who grew up alongside us—cousins, uncles—because they are familiar with our flaws. They’ve seen our weaknesses and made fun of our faults, and for that reason, they believe they can still do so. Yet, the hand of an adult weighs heavier and wounds the honor more than the playful blows of childhood fights. I suggest you grow distant and return unrecognizable, so their disrespect will no longer find its intended recipient.

Furthermore, a man must demand respect…

but he must not become emotionally obsessed with every small disrespect, or it will rob him of his peace.

To be affected by every little insult is to acknowledge it as significant.
